Installation and Configuration of the Air Techniques ScanX Plugin

  1. During MiPACS install, select “Air Techniques ScanX” from the Select Components screen and follow the prompts.

  1. Once the plugin is installed you are prompted to install the ScanX drivers from the Mipacs installation CD:

  1. If this unit is the In Line Erase (ILE) type, run the ScanXILEDriversutilties.msi. You must select the custom option and specify the installation path to the C:\Program Files\MiDentview\Plugins\ScanX directory.

  1. The next option you are presented with is the ability to configure Dynamic Rendering (DR). It is recommended to enable this feature as it improves the quality of images significantly. Leave the Configure DR box checked and click the finish button.

  1. You are now presented with two images, one with Dynamic rendering and one without. Select the quality that is preferred.

If you select the both images option, the unit will return two images for each plate scanned, one Dynamically rendered, and one without. This is NOT the recommended method for use with the Mipacs Enterprise Viewer.

  1. Click next for the same choices for the Pan Ceph plates, and make your selection. Click next to complete the drivers installation. At this point, connect the ScanX machine to the computer and power it up. Windows will recognize a new device and install the proper drivers.

  2. Launch Mipacs to see the new ScanX icons.

  1. Click on the ScanX setup icon (hammer and wrench) to get to the setup options. Here you can choose scan resolutions from standard, high, and very high for each device. Be aware the higher the scan setting, the longer the plates take to pass through the machine.

You also have image bit depth options, image enhancement options, and weather or not to save a copy of the last image for use in enhancement settings that will be applied to each captured image.

  • Invert images must be selected due to the ScanX passing the images in an inverted format from the unit. It is also recommended to check the import at once button so the images pass directly into MiPacs as opposed to getting a preview and having to wait until the scanner stops to save to MiPacs.

  • It is recommended to use the first image enhancement option as this provides a comparison view between the raw image, and any enhancements that are made from the last image scanned. This provides a way to dynamically adjust the image quality without having to scan several plates for the desired results. “Click here for enhancement options” and select either the Intra-oral, Pan, or Ceph settings.

  1. The recommended enhancement option is to ”Enable histogram stretch” and adjust both the upper and lower cutoffs until the desired results are reached. Generally, a higher Lower cutoff will darken the image, and a higher Upper cutoff will lighten the image. Click the update preview to see your changes. A good starting point is Upper histogram cut .5%, and lower histogram cut 2.5%.

  2. Click on the ScanX icon to activate the plugin. You will see the red idle icon change to a green active icon. You will also notice the scanner slot lights have now illuminated in a green manner. This signifies that the plugin is now ready to accept images that are returned from the unit and that everything is working properly.

  • Note that there are three ScanX Icons. One for Intra-Oral, one for the Pan, and one for the Ceph plates. You must activate the proper icon for the proper plates. If you hover you mouse over the icons, it will display the function for that icon.
