Purpose. Uniform SOP prescribes guidance and standards for the Utah State Militia uniform, patch and insignia locations, as well as standards for use.
Scope. The SOP applies to all elements of the Utah State Militia enlisted and commissioned members, and their families in the state of Utah. Regional commanders modify to suit tactical situation.
Overview. This SOP will cover the USM uniform for field use, PR use, as well as prescribe when it is necessary to wear the uniform and when not to.
CAMOUFLAGE UNIFORM ENSEMBLE
The camouflage uniform shall be a two piece uniform consisting of pant/trousers and a top jacket zip or button up long sleeve in the Multicam pattern. Uniform should be mil spec quality.
When using LBE or plate carrier, the top may be a combat style, also known as an assault shirt, which typically is a pull over design with a tan base around the torso and long sleeves in Multicam.
For cold weather use, a parka shell in Multicam or appropriate terrain colors may be used, IE: varying colors for snow operations.
Boots must be durable and able to provide comfort and safety for person wearing them.
Typically boots are a tan or otherwise blending color to the environment.
Can be military spec combat boot or durable hiking boot.
No cowboy boots.
Cover shall consist of a patrol cap, baseball cap, or boonie hat in Multicam color. Optional are flag patches or morale tapes on back of caps. Name of person may be used on rear of cap.
PATCH & INSIGNIA
Patches to be worn in specific area to identify member as well as identify region where they are from.
When wearing zip/button up jacket with collar, patches shall be worn in the following manner:
Left shoulder: Velcro unit patch in the middle of the main body of sleeve pocket. If no pocket with Velcro is available, sew on patch midway from elbow to shoulder. Specialty tab, such as FPG may be worn above unit patch. Blood type patch below unit patch.
Right Shoulder: Reverse American Flag on Velcro pocket flap at top of pocket. Morale patch or deployment patch (for veterans) may be worn in middle of main body of sleeve pocket (optional). If no Velcro or pocket is available, flag will be sewn on ¾ ways up from elbow to shoulder. Morale patch sewn on midway from elbow to shoulder.
Chest: Name tapes worn as follows: 5” Multicam name tape with black 1” writing. Left side: US MILITIA. Right side: NAME
Rank: Velcro square with rank indicated attached to middle front of uniform for easy identification of rank in the field.
When wearing combat or rapid assault style shirt, patches shall be worn in the following matter:
Left shoulder: Velcro unit patch1 in the middle of the main body of sleeve pocket. If no pocket with Velcro is available, sew on patch midway from elbow to shoulder. Specialty tab, such as FPG may be worn above unit patch. Blood type patch below unit patch. Optional, blood type patch or carabiner may be used on plate carrier if there is no room on the combat shirt sleeve.
Right Shoulder: Reverse American Flag2 on Velcro pocket flap at top of pocket. Last name tape worn below American Flag. Rank worn below name tape. All patches must be Velcro and removable. If there is no room for multiple patches, a two line flight patch3 with wearer’s last name, blood type, US MILITIA, and rank may be worn.

PUBLIC RELATIONS UNIFORM ENSEMBLE
The Public Relations Uniform shall be a two piece design consisting of either the black POLO with USM logo on left chest or t-shirt design with USM on left chest and large logo on the back. The pant/trousers shall be tan in color.
Shoes or boots must be appropriate for activities being performed in uniform, and must compliment uniform. Brightly colored tennis shoes or cross trainers may not be used.
Patches, name tapes, or rank are not to be worn on PR uniform for any reason.
APPROPRIATE USE OF UNIFORM
Uniforms are to be worn at all times during official Utah State Militia business or while performing duties in the field.
Uniform wear during internal meetings is optional.
Camouflage uniform to be worn during field training exercises and other training as prescribed by AO leadership.
PR Uniform to be worn when conducting official Utah State Militia business outside of the training environment when interaction with the public will occur.
For PR events such as shows, protests that the militia supports, interviews, recruiting meetings, service projects, the POLO shirt will be worn.
For PR events or service projects that require physical exertion, the t-shirt may be used in place of the POLO for comfort.
Uniforms may not be worn when not conducting official USM business or training. If person wishes to wear their camouflage top and trousers to conduct personal training, or to attend training at other institutions, they must remove their rank, unit patch, as well as name tapes and militia tape.
If the user feels that wearing the US Militia name tape would be beneficial to the USM while conducting their own training or training at other institutions, they must receive approval to do so from their commanding officer. However, militia rank is not to be worn outside of official militia functions. No exceptions.
If the wearer of the PR uniform wishes to do so, they may wear the t-shirt outside of official militia duties, but must ensure to behave in a manner that will not harm the militia’s public image.
