Hello Predents!

Thank you everyone for coming to yesterday’s meeting where we heard from Carolyn Feller and Braulia Espinosa from UIC College of Dentistry Admissions!

Here’s an outline for anyone who wasn’t able to attend.


  1. UIC College of Dentistry is one of the largest medical districts in the world. Campus units include: medicine, pharmacy, nursing, public health, physical therapy, and they are also part of the Illinois Medical District which includes Rush University and Cook County Hospital


  2. UIC COD offers programs such as:
    -DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) program

-DMD/PhD program (7 years)

-MDM-MS in Clinical Research (5 years)



-Post Graduate Specialty Programs

  • Endodontics

  • Oral Surgery

  • Orthodontics

  • Pediatric Dentistry

  • Periodontics

  • Prosthodontics

  1. Dental Education at UIC COD runs for 4 years. A quick curriculum overview of dental school:

    1. Learning will be active, not passive. Less lectures, more discussions

    2. Different learning formats such as:

      1. Interactive Didactic Sessions (Lecture)

      2. Small Group Learning (SGL)

      3. Anatomy Lab

      4. Independent Study

      5. Shadowing in Clinics

      6. Ethics Presentations

    3. Students learn clinical from the very first year of dental school. D1’s engage in pre-patient care activities

    4. Learning is a collaborative not competitive model—everyone works together



  1. Admissions Requirements for UIC College of Dentistry

    1. A Baccalaureate Degree is required

    2. All course credits must be from an accredited United States college or university:

      1. Required courses:

        1. Chemistry- 14 semester hours with at least 4 semesters in Organic Chemistry

        2. Biological Sciences- 6 semester hours

        3. Physics- 6 semester hours

        4. English- 6 semester hours

        5. *Biochemistry is a new requirement at UIC*

      2. All required prerequisite courses taken must be a grade of ‘C’ or better

      3. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are not accepted as course requirement

    3. Dental Admission Test (DAT)- It is strongly suggested that applicants complete this test prior to the year they wish to enter school

    4. Letters of Recommendation- Three letters of recommendations are required. One committee letter will satisfy the three-letter requirement. It is strongly recommended that two references come from science professors and one from a dentist you have shadowed

    5. Residency Requirement- In order to be eligible for admissions to the DMD program, candidates must hold United States citizenship, permanent residency or Asylee status






  1. Competitive Attributes

    1. Strong science background

    2. Evidence of academic maturity—able to handle heavy course loads

    3. Research Experience

    4. Experience in the dental profession/shadowing—minimum 100 hours (remember Braulia mentioned having 500 hours doesn’t mean you are going to be automatically accepted.)

    5. Community Involvement/ Leadership




  1. Application Process

    1. AADSAS: June-December

    2. UIC COD Application Deadline: November 15th

    3. Applications are reviewed: August-February

    4. Interviews: September-February

    5. Admission Decisions: December-April




  1. Class of 2020 Demographics



    1. Science GPA: 3.56

    2. Non science GPA: 3.7

    3. Cumulative GPA: 3.57

    4. DAT Academic Average: 20.7

    5. DAT Perceptual Ability: 20.5

    6. DAT Science Total: 20

REMEMBER: these are just the averages, not the ranges you need to be in!

    1. Predental Night/ ASDA Open House: November 17th, 2016

    2. Graduate and Professional Fair: October 6th, 2016 from 3-7pm at UIC Forum (perfect opportunity to ask more one on one questions with Braulia!)

    3. Illinois Pre-Dental Conference During the Chicago Dental Society Mid-Winter Meeting: February 24th, 2016 (we will send out more information on this as we get closer)

    4. Clinic and Research Day: March 2, 2016
