North Sulawesi Volcanic Activity
Background
There are five active volcanoes in North Sulawesi:

        1. Mt. Lokon, Tomohon City is on level II alertness. Total population potentially affected: around 80,000.

        2. Mt. Soputan, South Minahasa is on level II alertness. Total population potentially affected: around 50,000.

    1. Mt. Karangetan, Siau Island is on level III alertness. Total population potentially affected: around 42,000.

  1. Mt. Awu, Sangihe Island is on level II alertness. Total population potentially affected: around 50,000.

  2. Mt. Ruang, Ruang Island is on level III alertness. Total population potentially affected: around 23,000.

All five volcanoes are among the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Mt. Awu showed increased activity in June 2004 leading to the evacuation of over 20,000 people. Mt. Ruang erupted on September 25, 2002. While no fatalities were reported, more than 1,000 residents on Ruang Island were forced to evacuate.
