Pakistan joins the international community in celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations. This is an occasion to reaffirm our belief in multilateralism and the United Nations as the best means to address the global challenges of today. This conviction is manifested in Pakistan’s strong record of contribution to and engagement with the United Nations.
The United Nations has a key role in promoting pacific settlement of disputes and upholding the right to self-determination of peoples under alien domination and foreign occupation. Pakistan believes that a just and lasting resolution of the Jammu & Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations is essential for durable peace and development in the region.
As a leading troop contributor to UN Peacekeeping over the decades, Pakistan has made substantive contribution to the United Nations’ efforts in carrying out its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. Over 150,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have served with distinction and professionalism in some of the most challenging conditions, to help maintain and build peace and restore hopes of millions affected by conflict around the world. 142 Pakistani blue helmets have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving under the UN flag.
The United Nations is also an ideal forum to galvanize global action on key priorities ranging from human rights to development and climate change. In this context, the recent adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals holds great significance in advancing the well-being and prosperity of billions of people around the world.
This is an occasion to reaffirm our abiding commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations. The international community should work together to realize the noble objectives of the United Nations and further strengthen this world body to make it even more effective. Pakistan will always be in the forefront of this endeavour.
