Also to serve on various college and hospital committees, in additions to clinical and teaching commitments. As professor, I had been able to introduce a system of rotations for the postgraduate trainees so as to expose them to various basic and clinical aspects in the field of ophthalmology.

The Liaquat Medical College (now upgraded to Liaquat University of Medical & Health Science) is a premier and one of the oldest medical institutions of Pakistan. The Liaquat University Hospital is having 1800 Beds, 24 Operations theater suites, 02 ICUs, 02 Radio Diagnostic Centers & 03 Pathology Diagnostic and Research Laboratories.
The Eye Hospital at LUMHS has 03 units with 12 faculty members, 03 professor, 03 associates, 03 assistants and 03 senior registrars, being housed in a purpose built premises. It has more than 100 inpatients accommodation. It consists of 04 operations theaters, equipped with 04 operating microscopes, with teaching aids and C.C TV facilities, 02 Phaco machines, 04 YAG lasers, Fundus camera, ‘A’ & ‘B’ Scan. Laboratory, pharmacy and a big outpatient department with approximately 400 patient attendance daily. There is a widely stocked library and air-conditioned reading room. A seventy seater seminar room is available in the ward premises, where seminars and workshops are held on a regular basis.

  • There is an active post-graduate training programme throughout the year. During the last 15 years that I have been associated with this department, some 78 doctors have been trained through this programme. More than 10 doctors have acquired FCPS, 12 have acquired MCPS (Fellowship and Membership of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), and Diploma in Ophthalmology. (D.O).




  • Two doctors have acquired FRCPS / FRC Ophth from the UK.

The responsibilities of an Assistant Professor include assisting the unit head in day to day clinical work, teaching the under-graduate students. The position is open for Ophthalmologists with a higher diploma (as opposed to Senior Registrar). The position is equivalent to that of a British Senior Registrar, performing some tasks independently and others under direct supervision of the unit head (Professor). The doctor needs to work under close supervision, prove his competence and surgical skills to the Unit Head before being allowed to work independently.

Some 12 of these passed the Fellowship and 20 passed the Membership examination of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), 10 Passed Diploma in Ophthalmology (D.O) from University of Sindh / Liaquat University Medical and Health Science Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan and 04 have completed their training for MS (Ophth) of the Liaquat University Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan. Of the successful trainees, 05 Fellows, 07 Members and 06 Diploma holders trained directly under my supervision. As a supervisor, I oversee and guide the research of my trainees for dissertation writing as a requirement for the Part II Fellowship Examination of the CPSP.




    1. Organizer / Facilitator – Postgraduate Training Courses for MCPS / FCPS at the College Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) 1989, 1993, and 2004. These were post-graduate refresher courses for the trainees about to take the Part II Fellowship Examination. This involved designing the course, choosing the Faculty, conducting the course and sharing the lectures and tutorials.




    1. TEACHING / TRAINING IMPARTED OVERSEAS: Of Undergraduate Medical Students, Ophthalmic Nursing and Ophthalmic Technicians and other paramedicals at Liaquat University Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan and at Isra University Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan.


TEACHING / TRAINING IMPARTED OVERSEAS:
Undergraduates (Final year M.B.B.S) of King Saud University Riyadh and King Faisal University, Dammam, for clinical ophthalmological teaching which was provided in informal group discussion in the outpatients, inpatients and surgical procedures explained in theaters.
Postgraduate teaching to the department junior staff in particular and junior from the department of Medicine from time to time, being the Clinical Tutor of the department, task was to arrange and supervise the formal lectures on basic, medical and surgical ophthalmology and informal discussions and tutorials on various topics and clinical case presentations Journals club, to keep up with literature.



  1. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES



  1. Member technical Committee, Research Foundation, Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan (OSP) since 2003.

Research Foundation was established as a subsidiary of the Ophthalmology society of Pakistan by some of the members of the OSP. The technical committee has designed a proposal proforma and ground rules have been formulated and floated in the fraternity. Area of research have been identified and proposals have been invited.




  1. Clinical Evaluation, efficacy & the safety profile of topical ophthalmic drops (Code # ASO 12001) as a post-operative therapy in patients of cataract extraction & implant surgeries at Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Eye Hospital Hyderabad, Sindh.




  1. Supervised, guided and monitored original research for thesis writing for three MS students and dissertation writing for some fifteen Fellowship students. I am on a regular roll for the assessing the dissertations of the candidates for Fellowship of the CPSP.

One has to show evidence of continued professional development (CPD) in order to be invited to climb a series of steps such as observer, paper-setter, theory paper assessor, and then an examiner at the clinical and oral part of the examination.

WORK IN THE FIELD OF COMMUNITY EYE HEALTH / GENERAL



    1. Free Eye Camps

Organized and conducted with Co-operation of ISRA, SAFA, Society for Prevention and control of Blindness.

More than 5000 Cataracts have been operated, and about 30,000 Eye OPD cases have been seen and medically treated.



    1. Free Medical Camps

Organized and conducted in almost all rural areas of Sindh, Pakistan where all the Medical, Surgical and Dental OPD Clinic were arranged. Patients were seen by Senior Consultants and medicines were provided free of cost to all patients.





    1. Drought affected areas

Medical help, food and medicines were distributed among the needy people in drought affected areas, like Thar, Kohistan, Jati and Haji Khan, Kacho


More than two million people were attended and provided with help and assistance at their door step.


    1. Eye Patients Welfare Society
