TURTLE TYKES



Purpose: To understand how genetic information is passed from parent to offspring and to compare the

results of uniform or diverse offspring from sexual or asexual reproduction.



  1. Flip the penny for the traits that the new turtle tyke will receive from the mother turtle.

If you get “heads” then they get the first letter and if you get “tails” they get the second letter.

(*If they have two of the same—no need to flip. )

2. Flip the nickel to determine the traits the tyke will receive from the father turtle (same rules as

above.)


  1. In the next column, combine the traits from the mother and father. These are the traits of the new turtle tyke. Use the Key to help!




  1. In the final column write down what physical traits (phenotypes) should appear in the baby turtle.

  2. REPEAT steps 1-4.

  3. Color your baby turtle tykes according to the information gathered.

  4. Exchange information from another group to color tykes 3 and 4.
