Toothpaste Lesson

Grades K-1
We use words every day. We use words for learning, to say how we feel, to talk to our friends. Our words can be helpful and kind or our words can be hurtful and mean. We get to choose what kind of words we say.
Need:

Tube of toothpaste (travel size is okay)

Paper plate

“Words are Not for Hurting” by Elizabeth Verdick

Activity:
Select a student to be your helper. This student needs to squeeze all of the toothpaste out of the tube onto the paper plate. Once they are satisfied it is all out, ask the student to put the toothpaste back in the tube. When the student says that they can’t, explain that it is the same concept with words we speak. Once you have said it, it is said. You can’t put the words back in your mouth any more than you can put the toothpaste back in the tube.
We say things all the time without even thinking about the consequences. Emphasize being cautious about what we say.
* Instead of toothpaste, you can use salt/salt shaker, ketchup/ketchup bottle, etc.
