JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Policy Officer (Two years, fixed term)


GRADE: Operational 1

DIRECTORATE: Medical Schools Council

RESPONSIBLE TO: Policy Adviser

MSC is looking for a highly organised and motivated individual to support the implementation of a ground breaking project focused on selection to medical school and widening participation. The post holder will use their excellent communication skills to liaise with stakeholders on a variety of issues related to selection. They will also effectively manage the progress of projects and provide updates to various governance groups. This role will also involve the production of high quality policy papers and data analysis.


This role would suit someone who wishes to pursue a career in policy development and who has an interest in healthcare education or widening participation to higher education.

Background:
The Medical Schools Council (MSC) provides the Secretariat for a number of separate but complementary organisations at the interface between healthcare and higher education, these organisations include: the Medical Schools Council (MSC), The Dental Schools Council (DSC), the Pharmacy Schools Council (DSC), the Veterinary Schools Council (VSC) and the Association of UK University Hospitals (AUKUH). In turn each of these organisations comprises working groups and sub-committees working with clinical academics and NHS leaders at the highest of levels.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
The role holder will have responsibility for:


  • Managing committee meetings for and supporting the development of the newly established MSC Selection Alliance. This will include organising Board meetings and larger Reference Group meetings.




  • Producing policy papers for consideration by governance committees and assisting in general policy development relating to medical selection and widening participation.




  • Assisting in managing a programme of research and liaising with researchers across a number of academic institutions.




  • Liaising with a wide range of stakeholders and facilitating relationships between organisations to further policy development in the area of widening participation to medical courses.




  • Preparing reports on the progress of the project and working with colleagues to produce an annual report on medical school progress in widening participation.




  • Data collection and analysis of metrics relating to widening participation.




  • Organising an annual conference on admissions for staff from a range of different professional education courses.
