Speech Marks

Quotation Marks (which are also known as “speech marks” and “inverted commas”) are used to show the words that someone has actually spoken. Quotation Marks (“...”) are always used in pairs. It is only the words that are spoken that are included within the quotation marks; all the other words are outside. For example:

“You have a blank expression on your face, Johnny,” said the teacher. “Do you have trouble hearing me?”

“No Miss,” he replied, “I have trouble listening to you.”

(Note here how a new speaker gets a new paragraph.)

Exercise 1 Punctuate the conversation below using speech marks.
