LAB: COMPARING WATER USAGE WHILE BRUSHING TEETHtoothbrush.jpg

OBJECTIVE: Use the data your class collected to compare the amount of water used when brushing your teeth with the water running vs. turning the water off.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Close the sink stopper to trap the water in your sink. Brush your teeth using your normal method. Measure how many cups of water used to brush your teeth. ________ cups

Did you leave the water running while you brushed your teeth? YES / NO

  1. Use the Excel spreadsheet on the Smartboard to document the amount of water used to brush your teeth. Using the computer keyboard each student should TYPE IN your cup amount in the appropriate column.

  2. When all the data is in the spreadsheet, use the average function on the spreadsheet to calculate the average for each column of data.

    1. What is the average number of cups of water used to brush teeth when the water is left running? Record to the nearest whole number. ______________ cups

    2. What is the average number of cups of water used to brush teeth when the water is turned off? Record to the nearest whole number. ______________ cups

  3. Use the averages that you calculated above to complete the data table below. (NOTE: 1 gallon=16 cups)

Statistics from 2010

Total amt of water used if water runs

( in cups)

Total amt of water used if water’s off

(in cups)

Total amt of water used if water runs

(in gallons)

Total amt of water used if water’s off

(in gallons)

Georgia (pop. 10,000,000)

USA (pop. 308,746,000)

ANALYSIS & CONCLUSIONS:

  1. Use the data from your table to determine the gallons of water that could be saved if

    1. Everyone in our class turned off the water while brushing his/her teeth ____________

    2. Everyone in our county turned off the water while brushing his/her teeth ________________

    3. Everyone in our state turned off the water while brushing his/her teeth __________________

    4. Everyone in our nation turned off the water while brushing his/her teeth __________________

  2. Using the water saved from your answer to 1d, how many Olympic-sized swimming pools could be filled?(One Olympic-sized swimming pool holds ~600,000 gallons of water) ___________________

  3. Do you usually leave the water running or turn it off while brushing your teeth? Has this lab influenced your opinion about leaving the water running vs. turning it off while brushing your teeth? Why or why not?

  1. What is the “going green” method of toothbrushing? Explain your conclusion.
