IMPORTANT LANDMARKS OF BRAINSTEM STRUTURES:

(caudal rostral)

  1. Mid/Rostral MEDULLA:

    1. 4th Ventricle = dorsal space (roof missing)

    1. Hypoglossal Nucleus (CN 12) = in periventricular zone, near midline

    1. Dorsal Motor Nucleus of Vagus (CN 10) = Parasympathetic; in periventricular zone

    1. Vestibular nuclei = Lateral; in periventricular zone

    1. Pyramidal tracts = Ventral; gross “pyramids” (base of medulla)

    1. Inferior Olivary Nucleus = gross “olives”

  1. Caudal PONS:

    1. Abducens Nucleus (CN 6) = lateral to medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF); in floor of 4th ventrical (periventricular area)

    1. Roots of Abducens Nerve = travel through tegmentum & base to exit from pons

  1. Rostral MIDBRAIN:

    1. Cerebral Aqueduct = part of ventricular system

    1. Superior Colliculi

    1. Periaqueductal Gray = periventricular zone of midbrain

    1. Tegmentum = midbrain part of reticular formation

    1. Red Nucleus

    1. Crus Cerebri = base of midbrain (gross = cerebral peduncles)

    1. Oculomotor Nerve (CN 3)
