The fast paced presentation of systems-based approaches to orthodontic treatment, marketing, and management is divided into two segments. Dr. Fry will share his thoughts on why self-ligation is gaining in popularity. Having used seven different self-ligating appliances and with over 7,000 cases treated with these appliances, he will show us why self-ligation is certainly gaining in popularity and will likely become the orthodontic appliance of the future. Dr. Fry will also address the rapidly changing environment of the orthodontic practice and how to manage these seminal events. These changes will present new and challenging opportunities for the marketing and management of the orthodontic practice. Topics will include:
Evolvement from “passive” to “interactive” self-ligation
Extraction versus non-extraction (stability and esthetics)
Clinical tips including archwire sequence, torque control, interproximal reduction, finishing, and laser therapy
Marketing in the 21st Century: internal, external and self ligation
Management of: time, human resources, change, and stress
Dr. Robert Fry is Adjunct Professor of Orthodontics at The University of the Pacific and University of Southern California. He has lectured nationally and internationally on orthodontic treatment procedures and practice management. Dr. Fry continually conducts extensive orthodontic studies and has participated in numerous alpha test projects. These include the first ceramic appliance, the first Occlusal Slot Lingual appliance, the Damon System and the Invisalign System (2 adolescent and MARA studies for Invisalign.) He is involved in local, national, and international charity efforts and is a member of the AAO Foundation.

Dr. Secchi is Assistant Professor of Orthodontics-Clinician Educator and Clinical Director of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, USA and Visiting Professor at the University of Los Andes, Chile. Dr. Secchi received his DDS from the University of Valparaiso, Chile; a Certificate in Advanced Occlusion from the University of Chile; and his DMD, Certificate in Orthodontics, and a Master of Science in Oral Biology from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Secchi is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. At the University of Pennsylvania, he has developed and implemented courses on Orthodontic Treatment Mechanics, Straight Wire Appliance Systems and Functional Occlusion in Orthodontics for postdoctoral orthodontic residents. He also provides didactic and clinical instruction for the predoctoral students and the Division of Graduate Dental Education.
Dr. Secchi's research interests include, primarily, the relationship between self-ligating appliances, friction and treatment mechanics as well as orthodontics and functional occlusion. He has published in various dental and orthodontic peer review journals. He received the 2005 David C. Hamilton Orthodontic Research Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Orthodontists (PAO), a 2006 Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Award from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF) and the 2007 Subtelny, Baker, Eastman Teaching Fellowship Award from the AAOF. Dr. Secchi maintains an active orthodontic practice at the Dental Care Center of the University of Pennsylvania.
“Complete Clinical Orthodontics-CCO: Integrating Classic Mechanics with Modern Straight Wire Active Self-ligating Appliances to Improve Efficiency, Control and Achieve Excellent Results”
CCO-Mechanics will introduce participants to an efficient and practical system to achieve excellent results in a variety of clinical situations when using straight wire self-ligating appliances. Participants will understand like never before the basis of the Straight Wire Appliance and how it has been integrated with self-ligation to improve efficiency and control. The rational behind a new appliance prescription to take full advantage of active self-ligating brackets will be explained. Several cases, step by step, will be shown along with the stages of treatment mechanics, anchorage preparation and optimal wire sequence. Treatment of Class I, II, and III malocclusions, vertical and transverse problems, extraction/non-extraction therapy, etc. will be reviewed.
