Chile Eating Contest

What would Chile Festival be without a Hot Chile eating contest? Can you take the heat? If so, sign up for a chance to win fabulous prizes — all for stomaching a few of the world's hottest Chile peppers!

The hotness of chiles is based on Scoville Heat Units. In 1912, Wilbur Scoville, a chemist by profession, developed a method to measure the heat level of chile peppers. The test is named after him, known as the "Scoville Organoleptic Test.

The substance that makes a chile so hot is called Capsaicin. Pure Capsaicin is rated somewhere between 15,000,000-16,000,000 Scoville heat units. To put Scoville heat units (SU) in a better prospective, a jalapeno is rated 2,500-8,000 Scoville heat units compared to a Habanero which is rated 100,000-325,000 Scoville heat units.

Rules and Regulations
All contestants must eat all but the cap of the chile to advance to the next round.
Round 1: Each contestant will start out with a Large Cayenne Pepper (Long Hots) (500-2,500 SU).

Round 2: The Red Fresno (4,000-5,500 SU).

Round 3: The Jalepeno Toreado (2,500-5,000 SU).
Round 4: The Serrano Chile (5,000-10,000 SU).
Round 5: The Orange Habanero (10,000-300,000 SU).

Round 6: The Chocolate Habanero (100,000 – 325,000 SU)

Round 7: The Trinidad 7 Pot Yellow (500,000 - 600,000)

Round 8: The Naga Jolokia (Ghost Pepper) (1,040,000 SU) *was formerly ranked as hottest pepper in the world.
Round 9: The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion (ranked as high as 2,009,231 SUChili Pepper Institute has identified the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion as the newest hottest chili pepper in the world as of February 2012. According to the New Mexico State University Chile Institute, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion ranks as high as 2,009,231 SHU on the Scoville scale, making it the hottest chili pepper in the world to date.

If there is not a winner after round 9 (nine), the Carolina Reaper will be used as the tie-breaker until the last contestant is standing.


Contestants are disqualified if they cannot perform the instructed actions described above or if they raise their white flag at the eating table. (Milk will be provided once a contestant surrenders.)

Contestants unable to keep the chilies down will be disqualified.

Each contestant is permitted only 1 bottle of water for the contest. No other food or drink is allowed on stage.

I, the undersigned, know that the above listed event is a potentially hazardous activity and I attend and participate it of my own free will and choice. In choosing to participate in the San Fernando Chile Festival, Chile Eating Contest and any related activities, I fully accept and assume all risks that may occur before, during, or after this contest and its related events. I accept this specific notice of the existence of the risks. I shall assume and pay my own medical and emergency expenses in the event of injury, illness, or other incapacity regardless of whether I authorized such expenses. I realize that this activity requires physical conditioning and I represent that I am in sound medical condition capable of participating in the contest without risks to myself or others. I have no medical impediment, which would endanger others or myself. Knowing these facts and in consideration of my entry acceptance, admission to and/or participation in the San Fernando Chile Festival, Chile Eating Contest and its related events, I for myself and anyone acting on my behalf, release, waive, discharge, covenant not to sue and agree to hold City of San Fernando, Odd Fellows, Kiwanis Club, San Fernando Mall Association, and San Fernando Chamber of Commerce or any sponsors; emergency and support personnel, volunteers and their representatives harmless from any and all claims, demands and actions of any and every kind I have, may have or may hereafter accrue against the released parties directly or indirectly arising out of or relating in any respect to my attending or participating in the San Fernando Chile Festival, Chile Eating Contest and its related events. If I am a minor, my parent or guardian also is signing on my behalf and we both agree to be bound by the terms of this agreement waiver and release.
