Making a Cloud
Purpose: to show how a cloud is formed.
Materials: candle or match

plastic soda bottle with lid

small amount of water
This may be done as a demo or as a hands-on activity.
Procedure:

  1. Tell students that you are going to make a cloud. Ask them what the first thing needed to produce a cloud are. (They should say water.)

  1. Put about 1 tablespoon of water into the soda bottle.

  1. Ask what the third requirement is. (They should say condensation nuclei.) Make sure they know this is small particles like smoke, dust or pollen in the atmosphere.

  1. Light the candle or match. Blow it out and quickly hold the smoking candle or match inside the bottle to allow the smoke to go into the bottle. Quickly cap the bottle.

  1. Ask students what the last requirement is to make a cloud. (They should say a temperature change. Remind them that the temperature change can be caused by a change in pressure.)

  1. Squeeze the bottle and a cloud should form in the bottle.

YOU NEED TO PRACTICE THIS TO SEE HOW MUCH SMOKE AND WATER YOU NEED TO GET THIS TO WORK.
