PIPPINS PRE-SCHOOL, EAST MARKHAM
Animal Care Policy

Aim

We believe in providing children with the opportunity to care for and learn about animals. We acknowledge health and safety while ensuring we create opportunities for raising children’s awareness of animals through personal contact. Animals can also help children to create links regarding their own personal care as they learn to recognise animals like them need love food, a home and place to sleep and protection. Animals provide children with the understanding of the world around them.

Children can be encouraged to learn about caring and responsible attitudes, helping them to value and respect all living things.

Pippins Preschool recognise the role that animals can play in children’s development.

At our setting we will endeavour to provide opportunities for interaction .

Parental consent

We acknowledge and remain sensitive to the importance of possible allergies, phobias and cultural preferences of our families by seeking parental consent as appropriate.

Health & Safety

We will ensure that animals have had the necessary health checks and therefore are free from infection and routinely screened. Sick or unsuitable animals will not be welcomed into our setting.

Children and staff must wash hands using antibacterial soap after pet care & handling and staff will ensure children are discouraged from putting fingers into their mouths, touching their eyes or handling food prior to washing their hands after.
Animal cages or equipment will not contaminate any food areas.
Handling and care “Code of conduct”

We will:
 Create opportunities for raising children’s awareness of animals and their behaviour, treating them with respect and not accidentally frightening them.

 Staff will create a safe area for animals prior to child involvement using covering for inside surfaces.

 Children will be prepared and briefed on safe handling of animals ensuring they are sat comfortable using a small carpet square on knees where required.

 Staff will ensure that only a small number of children care for the animal at any one time to prevent distress to animal or child.
 We will respect any child’s preference not to be involved with animals.

 We ensure housing is appropriate and secure and that children are unable to remove animals except under adult supervision.

 Staff will foster the relevant care routines with children and parents.

 Supervision will take place when the Children are handling and caring for animals.

Curriculum

Children will learn to understand that their behaviour can affect that of animals, and learn to challenge offending behaviour such as cruelty to animals and bullying.
