P-Coded Wastes

Discarded commercial chemical products, off-specification species, container residues and spill residues thereof.

The following materials are hazardous wastes if and when they are intended to be discarded:

  1. Any commercial chemical product, or manufacturing chemical intermediate having the generic name listed in this section.

  1. Any off-specification commercial chemical product or chemical intermediate having the generic name listed in this section.

  1. Any residue remaining in a container that is not legally empty.

  1. P-coded containers must be triple rinsed with an appropriate solvent before it is legally empty and no longer regulated.

  1. Any residue resulting from the clean-up of a spill of a listed waste.

  1. The phrase "commercial chemical product or manufacturing chemical intermediate having the generic name listed in this section" refers to a chemical substance which is manufactured or formulated for commercial or manufacturing use which consists of the commercially pure grade of the chemical, any technical grades of the chemical that are produced or marketed, and all formulations in which the chemical is the sole active ingredient.

EPA Hazardous Waste regulations specify that no more than a quart of these listed compounds be on-site (in laboratory) as a waste at any one time. Please refrain from purchasing more than minimum amount necessary to complete specific laboratory operations to prevent the waste from ever exceeding the regulated amount.
[Comment: For the convenience of the regulated community the primary hazardous properties of these materials have been indicated by the letters T (Toxicity), and R (Reactivity). Absence of a letter indicates that the compound only is listed for acute toxicity.]
