JOB TITLE Paralegal

PURPOSE OF JOB

  • To provide legal advice, assistance and representation to clients of the Firm within the Claimant catastrophic injury and clinical negligence section of the Personal Injury Department.




DUTIES

Legal


  • To provide legal advice, assistance and representation to clients in the personal injury department as follows:

From inception of case through to funding being granted, as follows:

    • Dealing with new enquiries, to include chasing enquiries made  to the team;

    • Taking part in new client meetings, as and when required;

    • Undertaking BTE and trade union enquiries;

    • Making contact with trade unions and insurance companies regarding funding;

    • Ensuring BTE checks completed and evidenced on file;

    • Sending rejection letters/acceptance documentation to clients making new enquiries;

    • Dealing with documentation returned by clients;

    • Completing public funding forms and supporting witness statements;

    • Submitting public funding applications to the Legal Services Commission;

    • Preparing and executing Conditional Fee Agreements;

    • Updating the New Enquiry Excel spread sheets as necessary;

    • Following the team's Protocol for dealing with new enquiries

To assist other members of the catastrophic injury and clinical negligence team

with more advanced catastrophic injury and clinical negligence cases as follows:


    • Paginating medical records and preparing / updating medical records index

    • Reviewing medical records and preparing / updating chronology of events

    • Opening new files

    • Closing and balancing off old files

    • Recording limitation in the Firm’s central diary system

    • Drafting letters of instruction to the relevant medical experts

    • Drafting instructions to Counsel




  • To conduct own caseload of matters for clients from inception of case through to funding being granted.

  • Providing assistance with marketing activities as required.

  • To provide typing support when required. This will be on rare occasions.

  • To comply with the Firm’s policy and department procedures on the following: -

    • taking and confirming instructions

    • client care

    • file management

    • file organisation

    • file review procedure

  • To seek assistance from the department head/colleagues in respect of unusual or difficult problems arising on cases.



Financial


  • To achieve and seek to exceed the chargeable time recording targets set by the Department

  • To invoice and recover the maximum fees possible and achieve any targets set

  • To monitor WIP levels, invoice or write off as necessary, and arrange file closures in a timely fashion


IT

  • To make the most effective use of the:

    • OMS, Audio/Digital Dictation and Voicemail systems

    • Email system

    • Internet and intranet

  • To use the outlook calendar for effective diary management


Business Development

  • To see to maximise internal and external referrals, formalising links with relevant departments

  • To work with the Head of Department, Marketing Manager and colleagues to develop the department and to generate new ideas of business


General

  • To make appropriate recommendations for service improvement

  • To deliver a first class (internal and external) client service

  • To attend and represent the department at meetings, as required

  • To undertake any other appropriate duties as may be required

  • To co-operate with and take part in the Firm’s appraisal scheme

  • To demonstrate support for the Firm’s Vision and Values

This job description will be reviewed annually and amended in consultation with the post holder
