Glossary of photographic terms

These are some photographic terms used in The Panorama Factory. We intend that these terms be used with their conventional meaning.

Be sure you have good translations of these terms before beginning to translate the string table. Please contact support@panoramafactory.com if you need clarification of an English term or a references that can help explain the term.

35mm camera noun Fotocamera 35mm
a camera using 35mm wide film

35mm equivalent focal length noun Lunghezza focale equivalente per 35mm
a way to describe the focal length of a camera by stating the focal length of a 35mm camera that produces the same field of view

APS camera noun Fotocamera APS
Advanced Photo System camera having a different film size and therefore different field of view from a 35mm camera for the same focal length

barrel distortion noun Distorsione
a type of image distortion in a rectilinear projection where scale increases with increasing distance from the center of the image.

brightness falloff noun Vignettatura
a gradual reduction in image brightness with increasing distance from the center of the image.

cylindrical projection noun Proiezione cilindrica

digital camera noun Fotocamera digitale
a camera using a digital sensor instead of film

digital SLR noun Reflex digitale
a digital singlle-lens reflex camera, usually having interchangeable lenses

equirectangular projection noun Proiezione equirettangolare

exposure noun Esposizione
the amount of light reaching the imaging surface (film or digital sensor).

focal length noun Lunghezza focale
distance from center of projection to the imaging surface (film or digital sensor); an inherent attribute of a camera's lens

focal length multiplier noun Fattore moltiplicativo della lunghezza focale
a multiplicative factor that relates the focal length of a camera to the focal length of a 35mm camera that produces the same field of view

HFOV noun Angolo di campo orizzontale
horizontal field of view, usually expressed in degrees

pixel noun Pixel
a single dot in a digital image

rectilinear projection noun Proiezione rettilineare
the projection produced by a conventional camera; also called gnomic projection, see

rotational camera noun Fotocamera rotante
a type of panoramic camera in which the entire camera rotates as the film is pulled through the camera, painting the image through a slit onto a curved film plane and producing a cylindrical projection

sensor noun Sensore
light sensitive device that captures a digital image

swing lens camera noun Fotocamera ad obiettivo rotante
a type of panoramic camera in which the lens rotates from side to side, painting the image through a slit onto a curved film plane and producing a cylindrical projection

telephoto converter, tele converter noun Adattatore teleobiettivo
an adaptor that increases the focal length of another lens, decreasing the field of view

VFOV noun Angolo di campo verticale
vertical field of view, usually expressed in degrees

wide angle converter noun Adattatore grandangolare
an adaptor that reduces the focal length of another lens, increasing the field of view

Glossary of terms specific to The Panorama Factory

These are terms used in The Panorama Factory in a specialized way. We intend to use these terms in ways that are compatible with their conventional meaning, but in some cases they are used in a more specialized or otherwise idiosyncratic way. The meanings of these terms are listed to help you choose appropriate translations.

360 degree panorama noun Panorama a 360 gradi
a panoramic image covering exactly 360 degrees of HFOV

accessory lens noun Aggiuntivo ottico
a wide angle converter or telephoto converter

to adjust the offset between a pair of images so that they match correctly.

a full frame scan of a film image produced by an APS camera; 30mm x 17mm

APS hdtv print noun Stampa APS HDTV
an APS image produced when the camera is set to record a 30mm x 17mm image on the film

APS panoramic print noun Stampa APS panoramica
an APS image produced when the camera is set to record a 30mm x 10mm image on the film

archive noun Archivio
a project where calculated images are usually represented only by recipes

array verb Mettere in sequenza
to create a new image by arranging a set of images in a horizontal or vertical sequence optionally separated by white space

array noun Sequenza
a horizontal or vertical sequence of images, optionally separated by white space

Array of images Sequenza di immagini
name of the dialog box for controlling an arraying operation

arrayed adjective Disposto in sequenza
resulting from an arraying operation <arrayed image>

barrel distortion correction, barrel correction noun Correzione della distorsione
adjustments to the shape of a conventional image to eliminate barrel distortion.

the numeric pixel value in a digital image that represents black

blend verb Fondere
to combine the overlapping parts of one or more pairs of adjacent alignable images, making a smooth transition from one image to the next in the stitched image; contast with compare

to remove the fine tuning of one or more pairs of images, returning them to their original state prior to fine tuning.

adjustments to the colors in the images as controlled by the color tool.

to combine the overlapping parts of a pair of alignable images by showing 50% gray for parts that are equal and brighter or darker values in proportion to the difference in color between the images; contrast with blend

to create one image from another by removing the left, right, top and/or bottom edges.

to create one image from another by apply a filtering operation, usually a sharpening filter; contrast with improve quality

exposure correction noun Correzione dell’esposizione
adjustments to the overall brightness and contrast of the stitched image to achieve a pleasing range from dark to light.

exposure matching noun Far combaciare l’esposizione
adjustments made to the overall brightness of one or both overlapping alignable images so that their brightnesses match well in the overlapping region.

falloff correction noun Correzione della vignettatura
increasing the brightness in the corners of an image to eliminate brightness falloff.

a convolution kernel for producing an enhanced image

to extract the required part of an imported image in order to prepare it for stitching.
