  1. Roles/Permissions for SIMS Assessment

Permissions for SIMS Assessment are defined in System Manager. Access is provided to various areas of functionality using a set of permissions that define what you are able to do. A set of permissions is grouped into a role.

To give users appropriate permissions in System Manager, you make them members of a Group to which the required roles and permissions have been attached. For example, if you want someone to have the permissions associated with an Assessment Operator, you must add them to the Assessment Operator group in System Manager. For more information, please see the System Manager handbook.

The permissions available for each role are listed in the following sections.

        1. Viewing Marksheets as a Course Supervisor

It is possible for Supervisors to view their ‘departmental’ marksheets in SIMS Assessment. This section explains which Supervisors can view which types of marksheet.

When a Supervisor is assigned to a Course, they should be assigned the Supervisor Title that best suits their role within the school, e.g. the Curricular Manager (although the role of Curricular Manager could have different responsibilities in different schools).

There is a pre-defined set of Supervisor titles, each with a pre-defined set of permissions for viewing SIMS Assessment marksheets. The appropriate title should be selected for each Supervisor.

To explain this in more detail, the following example assumes that SIMS Assessment marksheets have been created for the GCSEF Geography Course and four GCSEF Geography classes. The full range of Supervisors has been attached to this Course.

Supervisor Title

Permissions

Head of Department

Can view the Course marksheet and the four GCSEF Geography class marksheets

Second in Department

Can view the Course marksheet and the four GCSEF Geography class marksheets

Course Co-ordinator

Can view the Course marksheet and the four GCSEF Geography class marksheets

Head of Faculty

Can view the Course marksheet and the four GCSEF Geography class marksheets

Curricular Manager

Can view the Course marksheet only

Supervisor

Class Teacher
(this is not one of the Course Manager Supervisor Titles)

    1. Simultaneous Working on a School Dataset by the LA

There have been cases of data corruption, where an LA has worked on a clone of a school dataset and then imported the data into the school’s dataset.

Simultaneous working on a school’s dataset by a LA and a School, and then importing the data from the LA version of the school’s dataset to the school’s dataset can cause duplication of data in the school’s dataset. This process is currently not supported by the SIMS System.

LAs are therefore advised to avoid this working practice. Capita SIMS reserve the right to charge for data fixes caused by this unsupported practice.
    1. Applying the Exams Filter

Users with Assessment Co-ordinator and Exams Officer permissions can control whether or not users are given the option to view, from within SIMS Assessment, the Aspects, grade sets, result sets, templates, marksheets, OMR templates and Individual Reports that relate to the Exams Organiser module.

  1. Select Tools | Performance | Options to display the Options dialog.

  1. If you are an Assessment Co-ordinator or Exams Officer and you wish the View Exams check box to be available for all users to select or deselect, select the Toggle Global Exam Filter check box.

  2. If you wish the View Exams check box to be unavailable to users, deselect the Toggle Global Exam Filter check box. This means that the Exams Organiser elements will remain hidden from them.

  3. Click the OK button.
