Year 1 performance descriptor: recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes, including: 2D shapes [for example, rectangles (including squares), circles and triangles] 3D shapes [for example, cuboids (including cubes), pyramids and spheres].
Notes and guidance (non-statutory) Pupils handle common 2D and 3D shapes, naming these and related everyday objects fluently. They recognise these shapes in different orientations and sizes, and know that rectangles, triangles, cuboids and pyramids are not always similar to each other.
This work shows the range of activities leading to the child meeting the performance descriptor.
Agustin and his talk partner sorted a selection of different shaped ‘letters’ from the class post office. During feedback he was asked to write the name of as many 2D shapes as he could remember.
During a maths lesson, Agustin sorted 3D shapes with his TP, labelling the sets correctly. During feedback, the teacher removed the labels and Agustin recorded the names of the 3D shapes he had sorted.
