1.SAMUEL STALNAKER
Samuel Stalnaker was born before 1700 and died in 1769. He was

living in Augusta County VA in April 1748. He was captured by Indians

June 18, 1755 and his wife and son Adam were killed. He escaped from

the Indians and was referred to as "Capt. Stalnaker" in a September 8,

1756 letter from Governor Dinwiddie to Colonel Clement Reed in which

he instructed Colonel Reed to "Give Stalnaker 100 pounds to quailfy

him to raise his Company and Build a stockade fort and Drapers Meadow.

This fort was located at Smithfield, Montgomery County VA.

Jacob Stalnaker, a son of Samuel Stalnaker, was born about 1710

and died in 1792. His will was dated April 25, 1791 and was proven in

August 1792. He married Elizabeth Truby. Elizabeth was a daughter of

John and Esther (Westfall) Truby.

Jacob came to Tygarts River Valley in 1772 and established a

"Tomahawk Claim" that was later surveyed and grants signed by Governor

Benjamin Harrison of VA.

Jacob Stalnaker Jr., a son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Truby) Stalnaker, was born in Augusta County VA in 1739 and died November 7, 1834. He married Eleanor Truby. Eleanor, a daughter of Christopher Truby, died in 1816.

Jacob was granted 122 acres of land on the East Side of Tygart's River in Randolph County Va October 23, 1780. He applied for a pension as a Revolutionary War Veteran in Randolph County August 5, 1834 and stated that he was 95 years old.

Sebastian "Boston" Stalnaker, a son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Truby)

Stalnaker, was born in Augusta County VA about 1840 and died in

Randolph County VA in 1826. His will was dated January 22, 1826 and

was proven in the February term of Randolph County Court.

He married Margaret Hamilton. Margaret, a daughter of William and

Margaret (Walkup) Hamilton, was born in Augusta County in 1770 and

died in Randolph County in June 14, 1844.

Katherine Stalnaker, a daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Truby)

Stalnaker, was born in 1754 and died in 1839. She married Captain

Andrew White. Andrew was born in 1750 and was killed by Indians in

1777.


Katherine married Matthew Whitman. Matthew was born in 1760 and

died June 28, 1836.

Valentine Stalnaker, a son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Truby)

Stalnaker, was born in Augusta County VA in 1758 and died in Randolph

County VA November 29, 1833. (His grave marker gives his date of

death as 1834.)


Valentine was granted land in Randolph County by Governor Benjamin

Harrison of Virginia October 25, 1780.

He first married Catherine Parsons. Catherine was born in 1753

and died in Randolph County in 1803. Valentine married Lucretia

Jenkins in Randolph County February 19, 1806. Lucretia died June 30,

1845.


Valentine applied for a Revolutionar Veteran's pension in 1833,

but he died before in was granted. Lucretia later applied for and was

granted a pension for his service.

Samuel Stalnaker, a son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Truby) Stalnaker,

was born in Hampshire County Va in 1763 and died in Harrison County VA

September 10, 1835. He married Susannah Radcliff in Randolph County VA

February 26, 1788. Susannah, a daughter of William and Deborah (Hughes)

Radcliff, was born in 1765 and died in 1840.

Samuel served the Colonies in the VA Militia during the American

Rebvolution and was pensioned in Lewis County in 1833.

He married Catherine Marteney. Catherine, a daughter of Charles

and Mary Ann (Franck) Marteney, was born January 31, 1776 and died May

William Stalnaker, a son of Jacob Jr. and Eleanor (Truby)

Stalnaker, was born in Randolph County VA (WV) about 1783 and died in

Gilmer County WV September 18, 1874. He married Elizabeth Luda Goff

in Randolph County December 8, 1807. Elizabeth, a daughter of

Salathiel and Elizabeth (Gray) Goff, was born in Randolph County about

1786 and died in Gilmer County September 17, 1876.

William served as a Captain in the War of 1812 and was granted

land in what was to become Gilmer County WV in return for his

services.

According to Deweese, the family moved from Randolph County VA

(WV) to Gilmer County VA (WV) about 1813, but another source places

the move as 1817.

George Washington Stalnaker, a son of Valentine and Catherine

(Parsons) Stalnaker, was born February 27, 1777 and died in Cass

County IN November 14, 1857. He married Susannah Hart. Susannah, a

daughter of Edward and Nancy (Stout) Hart, was born in NJ February 14,

1782 and died July 1, 1843.

The family moved to VA in 1782 and to Randolph County in 1786.
