  1. Scope

    1. Identification

This specification defines the requirements for the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for the Norwegian armed forces. The corresponding designation of the PPE in the Norwegian language is “Beskyttelsesutstyr Eksplosivsøk”.

Some of the requirements refer to the PPE as the overall system and some requirements are specific for different segments of the PPE system. Segments of the system are in this document referred to as “subsystems”.

    1. System overview

The PPE is to be used within the operational area of the Infantry, Armour, Artillery, Air and Maritime forces (when Land based) and Engineers. The PPE will be located in all aspects of conflict from humanitarian missions to full scale war scenarios giving protection to personnel conducting explosive search, mineclearing and IEDD. The PPE can be exposed to artillery fire, small arms fire, B&C weapons and severe weather conditions. Enhanced survivability must be achieved by robust equipment.

The PPE is a modular system giving personnel the possibility to use different parts of PPE depending on the threat, and must consist of:

  • A protective suit/ add-on parts (protecting chest, throat, shoulders, back, stomach, crotch and legs)

  • Visor, protecting the face

  • Protection gloves

  • Protection Shield

A component overview is listed below in figure 1.2-1
