Where is the Object?

Grade Level: Kindergarten


Mathematics Domain and Cluster:

Domain: Geometry

Cluster: Identify and describe shapes.


Common Core standard(s) being assessed (if the task is intended to assess only one part of the standard, underline that part of the standard):

K.G.1: Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.

K.G.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.


Student Materials:

  • none




Teacher Materials:

  • Where is the Object? Assessment (Clip Art from Google Images)

  • Geometric Shapes (sphere, cylinder, cube, cone)

  • Pencil




Directions (for teacher to administer assessment task):

Teacher should assess students individually or in small groups.



  • Place the Where is the Object? Assessment in front of the student.

  • Place the geometric shapes near the Assessment for the student to refer to. Ask question prompts.

  • Teacher can write the positional word that student responds next to “position.” Teacher can make a √ next to “shape” if the student names the shape correctly.




Prompt:

  • Point to the first picture. Say: Look at the party hat. Use your words to tell me where the present is on the paper. What shape is the present?

  • Point to the second picture. Say: Look at the table. Use your words to tell me where the can of soup is on the paper. What shape is the can? Use your words to tell me where the soccer ball is on the paper. What shape is the soccer ball?

  • Point to the third picture. Say: Look at the die. Use your words to tell me where the basketball is on the paper. What shape is the basketball?

  • Point to the fourth picture. Say: Look at the traffic cone. What shape is the traffic cone? Use your words to tell me where the container is on the paper.




Correct or Model Answer:

First picture: The present is beside/next to/on the right of the party hat. The present is a cube.

Second picture: The can of soup is above/over/on the table. The can of soup is a cylinder. The soccer ball is below/under the table/can of soup. The soccer ball is a sphere.

Third picture: The basketball is behind/in back of the dice. The basketball is a sphere.

Fourth picture: The traffic cone is a cone. The container is in front of the traffic cone.
