FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is VSPGlobal investing in eCommerce?

  • Online shopping is here to stay and private practice doctors are currently being excluded. We’re developing a set of solutions that positions VSP doctors to compete in this market, connect to patients shopping online and generate revenue to their practice.

  • Currently, there are more than 200 online optical retailers, most of them focused on highly discounted products and some of them driving consumers to retail locations.

  • More and more consumers from a specific segment (under 34, higher incomes) are browsing and buying optical products online. Currently:

    • There’s been a 650% increase since 2007 in US adults purchasing their eyeglasses online, bringing the number sold to 1.8 million.1

    • 3.3 million US adults purchased non-prescription sunglasses online.1

    • 5.6 million US adults purchased contact lenses online.1

  • We want to help VSP doctors re-capture patients they may already be losing to online competition.

Did you conduct the beta you originally announced? Why not?

I see eyeconic.com as competing with me. Who are you marketing to with Eyeconic?

  • As the industry is changing, both VSP and private practice have to adapt to meet the needs of the market. Eyeconic is part of our plan to continue to connect patients with private practice offices like yours.

  • Our goal with eyeconic.com is to reach online consumers and direct them into VSP offices.

  • Our approach will be selective, targeted, and opportunity based. Let’s look at contact lenses for example: we’ll target and time our marketing to reach patients that are not returning to your office for replacement lenses before they go to 1-800-CONTACTS or WalMart. And when they buy from eyeconic.com with your prescription, we’ll pay you a professional support fee.
How will Eyeconic generate revenue for my practice?

  • When you create your custom storefront powered by Eyeconic, each transaction will create revenue for your practice. After the cost of goods sold and a small administrative fee, the remaining revenue from each transaction (about 25-35% of the list price) belongs to your practice.

  • Plus, eyeconic.com will pay you a professional support fee every time you are the prescribing doctor for an order placed on eyeconic.com.
Why are you not including eyewear in the first releases of eyeconic.com?

  • As a VSP Global company, Eyeconic is committed to an excellent customer experience and high satisfaction. To make sure we can deliver on these high standards, we are taking a phased approach to launching the Eyeconic set of solution to the market.

Frequently Asked Questions – Eyeconic, detailed
What if I don’t want my practice to participate?

  • As a VSP network doctor, your practice is automatically listed on Eyeconic, which will refer patients back to you and help your practice generate additional revenue.

  • If you choose not to participate:
I don’t want to participate and I don’t want my patients to have access to this site. How can I do that?

  • Even if you choose not to participate, we won’t be able to restrict your patients’ access to Eyeconic.
With Eyeconic, you’re selling directly to my patients—how is this supporting private practice?

  • Noticing a rapid growth in the online optical market and aggressive competition, we carefully considered solutions to ensure that private practice is able to gain a strong position in this emerging market.

  • As such, we’ve designed Eyeconic to connect VSP members inclined to shop online back to their VSP doctor.

  • Transactions made on Eyeconic refer patients to a VSP doctor and help VSP practices generate additional revenue.
Are you marketing directly to VSP members?

  • We will be actively marketing to VSP members who are inclined to shop online, who don’t currently use their benefit, or use it out of network, and as sunwear and replacement contact lens purchases.
What will my patients know about Eyeconic?

Initial VSP member communications will be very targeted toward ordering replacement contact lenses, browsing for sunwear, and referrals back to VSP doctors.
How will Eyeconic affect my practice’s bottom line?

  • By helping your practice take advantage of market opportunities. Targeting specific segments inclined to shop online, Eyeconic will reach those consumers where they shop and connect them back to their VSP doctor.

  • Eyeconic will help your practice generate additional revenue and will give you an alternative channel for incremental sales after your patients leave your dispensary.
Why does the online optical store only carry Marchon and Altair frames? Will you add other frames in the future?

  • At launch, we want to control as many variables as we can. We know that Marchon and Altair frames offer consumers attractive quality, consistency and choice. As the site grows, we will be looking at opportunities to add even greater selection.

  • All of the catalog selections are listed in eBuy on eyefinity.com.

First you introduce AOB (assignment of benefits), then Costco (affiliate provider), now Eyeconic. What’s next?

  • While VSP Global’s commitment to private practice is unwavering, we have to evolve along with the industry. These initiatives are just some of the ways we’re working to ensure sustainable success and long-term growth for VSP providers in this changing landscape.
What is happening right now? When will my patients begin to shop online?

  • Patients can begin shopping online at eyeconic.com for contact lenses and browsing for sunwear 7.18.2011. Additional products will be added to this site through a phased rollout.

  • Doctor storefronts will be available nationwide starting this fall.

  • If specific dates are requested, advise to “Stay tuned! We will be sending out regular updates with greater detail.”
