A Brief History of Burnt Factory Church

The early community of “Millbrook” was situated at the intersection of county roads #659 and #664. In 1814, the Opequon Manufacturing Company owned the original tract of land. The land was divided into twenty lots varying in size. Mr. Joseph Carter owned this site and his son James ran the paper mill, which utilized the water from the Opequeon Creek. Later, the paper mill was converted into a woolen mill and, after a time, the mill burned - hence, the name Burnt Factory.

In the early 1820s Jesse Calvert acquired the land from various lot owners. In 1826 he deeded part of lots 3 and 4 to The Methodist Episcopal Church for a place to preach the word of God. The original Millbrook Episcopal Methodist Church was built shortly after 1826. The only difference in the structure was a bell tower that was added after 1895 when the building was renovated with a new roof, entry, bell and paint job.

In 1920 Burnt Factory was one of five churches on what was the Brucetown Charge. The other churches were Stephenson, which is known today as Emanuel, Crums, Brucetown and Welltown. A motion was made on April 3, 1925 to tear the old Church down on April 8. The Church was formally re-opened June 24, 1928. On April 15, 1938, a 1/2-acre tract of land was purchased for a parking lot for a cost of $54.00.

1948 was a great year for Burnt Factory in many areas; birthday bank was started in January; electricity was installed; furnace installed in September; and an electric range was put in use.

Due to the growth of the Church and the need for indoor plumbing, an addition was needed. On October 24, 1968 at a called Church Conference, it was voted on and decided to proceed with the educational building. In 1968 The Burnt Factory Methodist Church became The Burnt Factory United Methodist Church, as the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

In 1980 the church decided to build a shelter on the land behind the church by the creek. The church went from being on a six-point charge to a four-point charge to a three-point charge (with Brucetown and Welltown) to a station charge in 1980.

… whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20:26-29
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Matthew 25:31-40
